Rod Tapers
Split-bamboo rods currently in production are of hexagon (6-sided) geometry.
Each is individually custom crafted using the taper of your choice to exact specifications.
Available split-bamboo fly rod tapers encompass a wide spectrum of casting preferences
which vary from fast, moderate (mid-flex) and slower to full-flex parabolic rod actions.
The on-file taper library incorporates a multitude of archived patterns that range
from many of the old classics and vintage tapers to contemporary rod design,
most of which can be modified to compliment all preferred fly casting styles.
Simply specify a rod taper or the type of action desired, then select
from either of the two base model fly rods found below.
Design
Made with meticulous detail and care - start to finish.
Only seasoned Tonkin bamboo culms with the highest power fiber density are chosen for use.
Select bamboo is twice flame-tempered to eradicate moisture content and provide fiber strengthening
heat treatment - followed by a second flaming application to achieve desired color/appearance.
Flame-tempered cane is offered in light, medium, and rich, dark tones. Mottle-flamed cane by request.
Every fly rod is individually custom crafted from the same tempered culm of bamboo
and offered in a variety of lengths ranging from - 5' to 9' feet - fabricated
as a one (1) tip fly rod or in the "traditional" two (2) tip configuration.
- Please refer to the "caneworks" page to view various photos of flamed culms -
The select Tonkin bamboo and fabrication process is always the same.
Whether you desire a 2 piece rod with the standard components package or a 3 piece rod
with Deluxe components - you are always assured a high quality custom rod to choose from.
Both models feature a standard 3 x 3 node spacing pattern designed with matching mirrored tips.
Custom four (4) piece fly rods up to nine (9') feet can be made - upon special request.
Split-bamboo spinning and casting rods are also constructed in several lengths (scroll down).
HollowBuilt construction is an available option for all split-bamboo rod models.
Flexibility. The operative word when choosing the design of your custom rod.

A Primer on the Method of "HollowBuilding"
This process is referred to as the chambered 'Bridge & Dam' method:
After final hand-planed dimensions are achieved the hollowbuilding procedure is performed. Done with precise detail - these solid bridges and dams are carefully channelled by hand at designated intervals to remove excess material along the internal length of the six tapered, triangular bamboo splines thereby forming semi-hollow chambers throughout
the interior walls and apexes of the rod blank.
Lighter, responsive accuracy.
HollowBuilding is a dynamic innovation that has been used for many years. In conjunction with the overall rod making process, this popular, highly regarded feature distinctly allows the fibrous properties and attributes of split-bamboo to retain the "natural and classic feel" it is so widely known for, while further maximizing the way in which a fly rod casts. It proves also to be greatly beneficial when striving to meet the needs of today's angler in search of high performance, lighter-weight bamboo fly rods with perfected line control and casting accuracy - without sacrificing power or the characteristics of how a specific bamboo fly rod taper is designed to perform. When a split-bamboo fly rod has been "synched" properly - (placing the line guides upon the weakest flat) and further coupled with the "built-in" efficiency of hollowbuilt construction the results indicate through extensive field-testing that the functional benefits in tandem produce a lighter-weight, optimized split-bamboo fly rod possessing smooth, seamless power and delicate, pinpoint accuracy that ultimately transfers pleasing results on to the flycaster.
HollowBuilt fly rods are known to "track & recover" with accurate fly placement
and improved line control - complimented by a significantly lighter feel in hand.
HollowBuilding is a reasonably priced recommendation
provided at about (1/2) - half the cost - found elsewhere.
Please refer to the "caneworks" page to view photos of the HollowBuilding process

Basic Steps in Constructing a Split-Bamboo Fly Rod
Rough Canework (approx. elapsed process time for a 2 pc. fly rod)
1. Bamboo culm preparation.
a) measure and cut culm to desired length for each rod section
b) hand file and sand exterior nodes Time required: 4-6 hrs.
2. Cane tempering.
a) Apply flame to the culm sections for initial heat-treating (drive out moisture).
b) Follow with a second application to achieve desired tone. Time required: 4-6 hrs.
3. Split (by hand) sectioned culm into 18 to 24 strips.
a) separate strips by individual rod section
b) remove the interior nodal dam, square the strips
c) mark and bundle by respective section Time: 4-6 hrs.
4. Select strips by individual section for type/length rod.
a) layout for node spacing
b) cut to desired length for roughing form Time: 2 hrs.
5. Heat and compress nodes.
a) straighten and square strips
b) sand exterior nodes again
c) re-bundle Time: 4-6 hrs.
6. Hand plane strips per individual rod section in roughing form.
a) Create 60 degree equilateral triangle. Time: 8-10 hrs.
7. Eradicate moisture content (final heat-treatment)
a) Place bundled strips in oven @ 350 degrees for 15 mins. Time: 2 hrs.
Final Hand Planing
8. Dial-in/set individual taper dimensions for respective rod section on adjustable planing form.
a) final hand planing per each section. Re-set dimensions, final planing - repeat for 3 piece rod, etc.
b) scrape and sand all strips to prepare for laminating Time: 6-8 hrs.
9. HollowBuild at this juncture - if required. Time: 4-5 hrs.
10. Rod blank fabrication.
a) apply adhesive to laminate strips
b) send glued strips through binder
c) hang laminated strips to dry allow 24 - 48 hours cure time Time: 3-4 hrs.
11. Scrape and sand all rod blank surfaces to remove binder cord, adhesive material and enamel.
a) cut blanks to specified length
b) straighten rod sections with heat (if necessary) Time: 4-5 hrs.
Ferrules
12. Install ferrules.
a) measure and mark ferrule stations on rod sections.
b) size and turn respective ferrule stations to fit (by hand)
c) clean all internal ferrule parts thoroughly
d) crown and feather ferrule tab serrations, clean again
e) glue and install ferrules allowing 24 - 48 hour adhesion time Time: 3-5 hrs.
13. Lap & fit ferrules by hand (female to male slide). Time: 1-2 hrs.
Rod Finishing Steps
14. Varnish and finish preparation.
a) sand and clean blanks dust free
b) initial varnish coat - dip or hand rub (allow 3 days drying time)
c) light sanding, clean dust free
d) repeat if necessary Total time: 5 hrs.
15. Install hardware ie; reel seat, grip, winding check, etc.
a) Synch and "spine" the rod.
b) affix tip-top to tip section(s) allow 24 hrs. component adhesion Time: 2-3
16. Determine guide spacing. Time: 1-2 hrs.
17. Attach line guides and hand-wrap the windings.
a) "Opaque" wraps; apply 2-3 coats of CP to thread windings.
apply 3-5 coats of marine spar urethane (2 coats per day)
b) "Transluscent" wrap effect; coat the thread windings with 6-8 coats of diluted spar urethane solution.
(2 coats per day) allowing 12-24 hours between each two-coat application.
c) ink the rod (add personalization inscription) allow 24 hrs. Total time: 12-16 hrs.
18. Two final dipped coats of marine spar urethane. Allow 10-14 days for finish to "semi-cure". *
*(full cure time for most varnish/urethane products is typically 2-3 months) Total time: 4 hrs.
